Tokyos Latest Blocky Tower
Construction work has begun on a new project in Tokyo, Japan. Tentatively named the Shibuya Shin Bunka Gaiku Project, the 34 storey tower forms part of a redevelopment plan centered around Shibuya Station elements of which has been penned by renowned architect Tadao Ando.
Rectangular in shape, the tower sits on a columned base and rises skywards to several flat roofs. Despite its shape, the tower is not one plain box-like affair but rather looks like it is constructed from several differently shaped boxes stacked to form the overall project, giving the facades texture where parts receed while others jut out slightly.
It also gives the impression of the various sections of use throughout the tower which is enhanced with the use of framing around some sections, the lower half of the tower appearing more sectioned whilst the top section is more sheer looking. The facades are glazed with strong horizontal and vertical lines in places, giving it a modern appearance.
The tower will be mixed use and will stand approximately 182 metres consisting of 34 storeys along with four underground levels which will function as parking as well as a link to the metro. The lower floors of the tower will house the shops where no doubt many a bargain can be found by the wiley shopper, the eighth floor will hold an academy for the artswhile the ninth will hold an exhibition hall.
Above this will be a garden theatre with an indoor theatre capable of seating 2000 people occupying the 12th-16th floors. The remaining floors will be given over to premium office space. All being well the tower should be completed by 2012.
