OMAs Pin-Art Bangkok Supertall

Construction has started on what will be Bangkok's tallest building, standing at 77 storeys and sitting on a 3.6 acre site located at the very heart of Bangkok's Central Business District the project named MahaNakhon comes from the doodled on drawing boards of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture or OMA for the lazy out there.

Wanting to create a unique and iconic structure for the tower that stands out from the crowd yet melds with the city, the design for the tower strays away from the conventional podium+ tower section = skyscraper formula.

Instead OMA has come up with a formula which sees the mass of the tower apparently being dissolved starting at its base where at street level cascading indoor and outdoor terraces mark the start of the complex this are will be known as The Hill.

At the base of the tower along with these terraces a free standing 7 storey fully glazed building which will be known as The Cube stands this also has multi level terraces, a large open air atrium will run between the Hill and the Cube, here public amenities such as restaurants and leisure facilities will feature and be connected to the city via a direct above ground link to the CBDs Sky train station as well as a plaza level access point.

From here the main tower rises upwards in box like shape that is saved from banality by the towers unique and interesting looking fašades which are fully glazed but in places look like a giant has come along at some point and chiselled away at sections of the curtain wall to reveal the towers innards giving the tower a deconstructed, pixellated appearance in places rather like giant pin art.

This look is achieved by having uniformly set floors in the unpixellated sections of the towers, whilst the pixellated parts are a series off inset sections mixed with large over hanging sections. These sections of the tower will offer its residents totally unique views of the city below while the rest of the tower will have more standard although still pretty special views.

The tower will contain 200 single level and duplex homes that will be run by the Ritz Carlton Group along with a 150 roomed hotel run by Marriot international in conjunction with world renowned hotelier Ian Scrager.

It will offer residents and patrons the usual luxuries such as gyms, but will also feature restaurants, cafes and of course the all important retail spaces along with a multi level, three storey skybar situated at not surprisingly the top of the tower, which will appear to float in the sky at 310 metres.

This will have a sky bar, restaurant, private dining facilities and a rooftop outdoor bar which will have fully panoramic views out over the city.
