Concertinaed Skyscraper Begins In Kuala Lumpur
Construction work has started on a new concertinaed glass clad tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Named 348 Sentral, the project which consists of two towers standing at 31 storeys and 22 storeys comes from the 10,000 experimental sea monkeys sat at drawing boards with overly elaborate, peacock feather quill pens in the offices of architects Hiijas Kasturi Associates.
The towers will stand on a five storey podium base, this will hold the most important part of the scheme, namely the shopping facilities. The roofs of the podium will be used as a deck area with green areas and restaurants for public use. From here the towers rise upwards to flat peaks minus any sort of roof adornments such as tiaras, spires and the like.
The facades of the tallest tower which are fully glazed are the focal point of the scheme and use the inspiration of diamonds in their designs, using prismatic sections with a diagrid pattern that create a rippled effect that reflects light in interesting ways. The second smaller tower opts for a more traditional linear look to its design, with heavy exposed vertical beams and a smaller amount of glazing used.
Several eco-hugging features have been included in the tower leading it to be given a gold LEED certification including a thermal energy storage system, raised flooring with under floor air conditioning and rainwater collection and recycling facilities.
One of the towers will house premium office space, the floor plates of which will be column free in order to give greater flexibility as to layout to tenants. The other will be home to luxury serviced apartments which will no doubt benefit from the usually fun extras such as a gym, spa, swimming pool or other added extra that makes tower dwelling such an appealing option.
