Shenyang Joins Chinese Supertall Rush
Preparation work is underway for the start of construction of a new skyscraper project to be located in Shenyang, China.
Called the Shenyang Eton Center, a name that evokes posh public schools, the design comes from the pens of American based architectural firm John Portman and Associates, and features 2 skyscrapers standing at heights of 400 metres and 300 metres as well as several low rise buildings. It will stand beside the Hang Lung Plaza twin towers which are currently under construction.
The project opts for two cylindrical towers that have a visible simplicity rather than rely on a gimmicky shape and post modern detailing. Constructed from glass and steel, the sleek towers facades feature a diagrid pattern as seen on London's Gherkin and popular on skyscrapers across the globe ever since.
Slender in form, the towers rise from street level to a lipstick style peak which has horizontal lines running across them. Around the two towers low rise buildings are arranged, one appearing to be a more squat, fatter version of the towers.
Billed as a premier mixed use project when complete it will provide over one million square metres of usable space and which will house luxury penthouse apartments, state-of-the-art office space, two hotels along with platinum card melting upscale retail therapy space.
The taller tower contains penthouse apartments and a 250-room, six-star hotel which will no doubt have a host of fantastic extras like pools, spas and other fun stuff. Office space will take up floors below. The second tower is a single use office tower. Both towers are public function space and sky garden observation areas at their peaks.
Construction is expected to begin mid 2009
